ACADEMIC INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIST
The University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry is seeking faculty for a position as an Inpatient Psychiatrist. Appointment will be as a Clinician Scholar - a non-tenure clinical track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The overall philosophy of this academic division is the provision of comprehensive patient-centered care in our inpatient settings and a variety of unique subspecialty practice settings within our healthcare system.
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa is renowned for its rich history and ongoing growth, marked by significant expansions in faculty and innovative partnerships, such as with the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. The department has enhanced its clinical services by developing novel new services such as our Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and our Neurobehavioral Specialty Unit (NBSU), a 4bed intensive care setting for our most complex patients with challenging behaviors. We have a total of 88 inpatient beds across 6 units, including a 15 bed child psychiatry unit, a 14 bed geriatric unit, 15 bed Psychotic Disorders Unit, a 25 bed unit for general psychiatry -a 15 bed Medical Psychiatry Unit, and the Neurobehavioral Specialty Unit. We have partnered with Emergency Medicine to staff a mental health services team (MD, social work, APPs) in the emergency room and in the fall of 2025 we will be opening a new 12-bed section of the emergency room dedicated to the treatment of psychiatric patients. Our short-stay CSU will be expanding in the fall of 2024 from 12 to 16 beds with an additional 5 beds for adolescents.
Our outpatient services include a vibrant Interventional Psychiatry service that includes ECT, TMS, ketamine and esketamine and a research protocol in psychedelic medicine. Our Addictions Recovery Collaborative has an ever-growing program of medication assisted treatment. Other specialty clinics include Women’s Wellness, Neuropsychiatry, Huntington’s Disease, and unique program with specialty care in patients with Intellectual Disability and Mental Illness (ID-MI) – the only program of its kind in the country.
Committed to excellence in teaching, the department has a large number of training programs including general psychiatry (12 residents per year), combined family medicine/psychiatry (4 residents per year) and combined internal medicine/psychiatry (2 residents per year). Our fellowships include child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and addiction medicine. Our program provides residents with opportunities to learn from leaders in various psychiatric fields, supported by a faculty known for high-quality patient care and educational contributions.

Perinatal/Reproductive Health Psychologist/Assistant Clinic Director

The Department of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa is seeking a Psychologist to join our clinical track faculty. The UI Department of Psychiatry is comprised of more than 90 full-time faculty members who provide national and global leadership across a range of psychiatric areas including child psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, eating disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, medical psychiatry, community psychiatry, and perinatal mental health.
This appointment will be on the non-tenure clinical track, open rank. The position is a 1.0 FTE and consists of 75% clinical, 20% academic, and 5% leadership time.
This Psychologist will join a progressive and growing psychology division within the larger department and will be a member of the Women’s Wellness & Counseling Service (WWC) team. The WWC is the product of a unique collaboration between the Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics-Gynecology. Located at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics - Iowa’s premier academic medical center - the WWC has the unique distinction of being the only clinic in the state to provide comprehensive, specialized psychotherapy and medication management services in an outpatient care setting. We serve women across the reproductive spectrum with a focus on the perinatal period. In addition to cutting-edge clinical services, we provide high-quality education to clinicians and student-learners, and design research protocols that highlight the value of our clinical and training efforts.
The WWC is a multidisciplinary clinic committed to upholding optimal standards of inclusion and diversity in patient care. Our staff is anchored by perinatal psychologists and psychiatrists but also includes nurse practitioners, social workers, doctoral-level students, resident physicians, and medical students. Since its founding in 2007 the WWC has experienced tremendous growth which has resulted in the development of innovative initiatives including a Health Psychology program with the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care (hospital fertility clinic) and an Inpatient Antepartum Mental Health Care Clinic, as well as embedded mental health care in the OB-GYN Maternal Substance Abuse Disorders Clinic and Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The primary foci of this position will be threefold: 1) the Psychologist will join the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care’s current Health Psychologist/WWC Clinic Director to provide fertility counseling and third-party reproduction consultations/evaluations, 2) the Psychologist will play an integral role in the implementation of a robust clinical research program with a reproductive health foundation, and 3) the Psychologist will serve in a leadership role as Assistant Clinic Director.
The Perinatal/Reproductive Health Psychologist will provide/engage in:
- Diagnostic assessment and outpatient psychotherapy using evidence-based individual, couples, and (potentially) group therapy models
- Care will be provided to those who are planning to conceive, coping with infertility, or suffering from perinatal loss, who are pregnant or postpartum, coping with PMS/PMDD or other OB-GYN medical concerns, or who are going through the menopausal transition
- Treatment will include both in-person and telehealth care
- Specialized care coordination with the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division, offering consultation, fertility counseling, and third-party/surrogacy evaluations
- Education, teaching, training, supervision, and consultation to medical students, doctoral students, physician residents, fellows, and other care providers
- Clinical research that focuses on patient care or training initiatives
- In collaboration with the Clinic Director the Psychologist will:
- Engage in development of clinic didactic programming and outreach initiatives
- Assist with day-to-day administrative operations including hiring and overseeing staff, running clinic meetings, managing use of facilities, and liaising with department leadership teams
- Represent the WWC and Psychiatry Department by serving as a member of various community, state, and national collaboratives and service initiatives designed to advance maternal mental health

The candidate will join the psychology division within the larger department of psychiatry. The candidate will be an active member of a specialized interdisciplinary team of social work, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, and medicine with expertise supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and severe challenging behaviors.

The Department of Psychiatry is recruiting a psychologist to join our interdisciplinary outpatient team to provide clinical services to children, adolescents and/or adults with intellectual disabilities. The psychologist will be responsible for providing outpatient therapy and clinical assessment as well as education and consultation to patients/families and care providers. Incoming faculty will receive mentoring and support for growth and innovation and almost endless opportunities for collaboration. The team is involved in research projects and its members support regional and national presentations, training and publication process. The team interfaces with safety and security, nursing, and physicians to support patients with behavioral needs throughout the hospital. Addiction Medicine Physician

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking a board-certified psychiatrist who is also board-certified or board-eligible in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventative Medicine, or in Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, to join our faculty and the University of Iowa Addiction and Recovery Collaborative (UI ARC). The appointment will be on the non-tenure clinical track, open rank.
Primary responsibilities will include patient care on the Addiction Medicine Consult Service and in the Addiction Medicine Clinic, supervision of residents and medical students. The position is a 1.0 FTE and consists of 50% clinical time, 30% time providing education and outreach for the UI ARC, and 20% academic time, with the latter devoted to scholarly pursuits which may include research and teaching.
The UI ARC is led by Alison Lynch, MD, MS and Andrea Weber, MD, MME. The UI ARC encompasses clinical services, education, research, and advocacy efforts in addiction medicine across the University of Iowa campus. Clinical services offered by UI ARC include a dual diagnosis partial hospital program, intensive outpatient program, extended outpatient program and relapse prevention, Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) Clinics that provide buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder as well as other FDA-approved MAT medications, a Walk-In MAT Clinic, an Addiction Medicine Consult Service, buprenorphine initiation in the emergency department, case management, peer recovery support specialists, contingency management, individual counseling including telehealth counseling, group therapy for professionals in recovery, and services for people with opioid use disorder and/or stimulant use disorder who are reentering the community following a period of incarceration. UI ARC collaborates with the Iowa Neuroscience Institute to support research initiatives in addiction medicine across the University. Research programs include those focused on molecular biology, genetics, brain imaging, and clinical trials in substance use disorders. Additionally, the UI ARC is highly involved in community efforts to increase access to care and reduce stigma associated with mental health conditions including addiction.

Therapy modalities may include evidence based individual, family, and group therapy models. Specialized training in cognitive-behavioral, exposure-based, and/or acceptance-based is preferred. The Department of Psychiatry within the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a board certified or board eligible psychiatrist to join our clinical track faculty and the IDMI (Intellectual Disability/Mental Illness) program. This program provides interdisciplinary, comprehensive, patient centered care to adults with co-occurring mental illness, intellectual disability and challenging behavior in the outpatient setting and inpatient setting. Clinical work for this position will include teaching and patient care in the outpatient and/or inpatient setting. We will closely with you to optimize your clinical assignment based on your interests and career goals. The position is a 1.0 FTE and consists of 80% clinical time and 20% academic time. All members of the Psychiatry faculty group share weekday, weekend and holiday coverage of the inpatient and consult services.
The Department of Psychiatry offers specialized training to medical students, residents, social workers, nurses, psychologists, and advanced practice providers. In 2022 the Department developed a specialized Intellectual Disability Track for residents. We currently have 3 exceptional residents on this track.
