Academic Activities

Fellows spend 40% of their time in academic activities. The goal of the PPF curriculum is to increase knowledge of public psychiatry, advocacy, and social justice while also growing clinical and leadership skills. To reach these goals, fellows will participate in interactive learning sessions, attend seminars, participate in local and state-wide work groups, and give presentations.

Curriculum topics will include but are not limited to history and structure of public psychiatry, population health, clinical administration, health care economics and finance, informatics, advocacy, social justice, social determines of health, trauma informed care, forensic psychiatry, substance use disorders, and co-morbid mental illness and intellectual disability.

Clinical Field Placements

Fellows spend 60% of their time practicing independently at their clinical field placement. Fellows can choose one or more of the below sites for their clinical field placement(s).

  • Iowa Medical Classification Center in Coralville, Iowa
  • Abbe Center for Community Mental Health in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
  • State Training School in Eldora, Iowa
  • State Resource Center in Woodward, Iowa
  • Mental Health Institute in Independence, Iowa
  • Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, Iowa

If an applicant has an interest in practicing at an alternative public and/or rural site, we will work with the fellow to facilitate a field placement at that site.

A physician or administrator from the clinical site will serve as the fellow’s job supervisor and will meet with the fellow on a regular basis. Fellows will also meet regularly with a PPF faculty preceptor. The faculty preceptor will be in periodic contact with the job supervisor.
