The Intellectual Disability–Mental Illness (ID-MI) Program provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to adults with intellectual disability, mental illness, and challenging behavior.

The primary goal of our program is to determine the underlying etiology, or cause, of the individual's challenging behavior. The etiology of challenging behavior is determined through comprehensive evaluations as outlined below. Once the etiology is determined, the ID-MI team works to develop and implement a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Psychiatric: All patients receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.
- Psychological: The majority of a patients receive a psychological evaluation by a Board-Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA).
- Medical: Consults from specialty services when indicated.
- Speech Pathology: If indicated, patients are referred to a Speech Pathologist to assist in developing or maximizing communication strategies.
Team Specialists
Psychiatric:
All patients receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.
Psychological:
The majority of a patients receive a psychological evaluation by a Board-Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA).
Medical:
Consults from specialty services when indicated.
Speech Pathology:
If indicated, patients are referred to a Speech Pathologist to assist in developing or maximizing communication strategies.
Outpatient Clinic
Patients access the ID-MI Program through our outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic at UI Health Care Medical Center (UIBH). The duration of outpatient care varies based on patient need, availability of alternative resources, and how quickly challenging behaviors can be addressed.
Inpatient Unit
We provide inpatient care when indicated. Our inpatient unit is a short stay unit with length of stay varying from a few days to a few weeks. Our unit does not provide long term placement or assist in finding alternative placement.
